Sony has always been supportive of small indie developers, giving them a chance to prove their skills and value on the market. This hasn’t changed, and with Sony’s backing, more and more indie developers are pumping out interesting games every month. In this post we take a look at 3 of the latest indie games that have been announced as coming to PS4.

Salt and Sanctuary

Imagine if someone pitched you an idea for a 2D, side scrolling Dark Souls Tibute. Well, now we know what the result would be. A small game development company called Ska Studios is bringing exactly this, a hard, dark game rich with content and characters. It promises a lot, as it is teased to contain more than 600 weapons and armor pieces, spells, items and a massive world of a few dozen regions filled with more than 100 animated characters.

The creators admit to being inspired by the House Greyjoy from HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, and their cold, morbid philosophy. Also the game draws a lot from medieval murals and ambient, making a visually pleasing and dark experience.

The game is scheduled to come out sometime in 2017, and it has also been announced for PS Vita, but as of now it is unknown when will the Vita version be coming out.

Very ambitious for an indie title, we will just have to wait and see if it delivers on its promises.

Sublevel Zero Redux

Sublevel Zero Redux

Sublevel Zero Redux is an homage to the old shooter games that comes from indie development studio Sigtrap Games. The rogue-like, loot-heavy title’s twist is its modern aspects like random level generation, looting and crafting, and most challenging, permadeth.

The visuals are also produced in the style of retro shooters combining classic 8-bit style with neon lighting, and the music perfectly fits with the graphics and gameplay of the game.

As for the storyline, the player controls a rouge gunship stranded on a forgotten asteroid base. To make matters worse, you have dwindling resources and no support, as well as surrounded by enemies. The mission of the game is a classic fight-through-enemy-lines kind of objective, with old school boss battles and a campaign that gets progressively harder as you go through levels.

The game was initially released in 2015, but the small team wasn’t able to finish it completely due to lack of funds, and was waiting for a sponsor to finish their project.

Sublevel Zero Redux is out on PlayStation 4 March 8th.

Knights of Valour

Knights of Valour is just the latest in a series that has a long history dating back to 1991 and the age of arcade machines, but this installment is the first one that is coming out for PS4, later this year. The arcade-style co-op brawler is a very determined way to carry on the classic arcade genre and side scrolling action.  adding in interesting factors that will make the game engaging for both old-school arcade fans and fans of modern co-op action games.
In a recent interview, the creators shared their thoughts about the inspiration that lead to making this game, such as exciting war stories based on some historical events, and clear-cut personalities. Knights of Valour has deep and extensive character customization, making every character unique and interesting. This feature allows for every player to build their own story based on their favorite skills and equipment.

The game is free to play and has both multiplayer and single player modes. There is, of course, paid content such as skins, new characters and items that make your player better, but the game is very fair and enjoyable even when it is played vanilla, without all of these expansions.
