Retro Reviews is a series that takes a closer look at older games to encourage people to take a trip down memory lane or just experience an older game for the first time.
I could make this easy for myself by reviewing games like Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty. But why do that when there are plenty of fantastic games out there? Welcome to retro reviews!
An Open World Zombie Survival Game
One game that I have dissected quite thoroughly is Dead Island, an open world zombie survival game. The game takes place on the island of Banoi and sees you, the player, waking up in your hotel room after a night of partying. Unfortunately for you, you have woken up in a zombie apocalypse. Consequently, you have the choice to pick from four survivors to play as. They each have unique abilities and preferred weapon types.
Firstly, you have Logan, an ex-football star and loudmouth whose special ability and preferred weapon is throwing knives. Secondly, there is Sam B, a rap one-hit wonder. His special ability is overwhelming rage as he goes to town with his brass knuckles. In addition, his preferred weapon type is blunt weapons.
Another choice you have is Purna, a police officer and private security guard who is tough as nails. Her special ability is a revolver that rips the living and the dead to shreds. So, as you can probably tell, her preferred weapon type is firearms.
Finally, last but not least is Xian Mei, a hotel clerk who seems innocent but is far from it. Her special ability is a very well concealed samurai sword. She uses it to slice and dice her way through hordes of flesh-eating heathens. Her preferred weapon type is bladed weapons.
Locations, Quests, and Infected Zombies
There are three main locations in the game. The first area that you start is among one of these locations. This is a resort which is a sunny beach area or in other words, a devilish paradise. After completing missions, you will be sent to the city of Moresby in search of food,water and other supplies. The city is a much darker and gloomy area as the rain constantly pours and the wind slices through it.
As you play through the game, you are being guided by a voice on a radio. The voice claims he can help you off the island and due to you being immune, thinks he can develop a cure. This man is on a small island nearby inside a maximum-security prison so your main aim is to reach him. The third area you get to traverse is the jungle. You come here because you need a boat that can take you to the prison.
Final Thoughts
The game is filled with plenty of things you can do like collecting blueprints to upgrade your weapons. You can also take on the unbelievable amount of side quests. You will never be bored playing this game as there is always something to do. Or you can quite simply roam your surroundings with your large arsenal of weapons and demolish zombies.
In dead island, there are many variants of infected so here is the list: walker, infected(runner), suicider, thug, ram, butcher, and bloater. These zombie types all have specific attacks and unique appearances, for example the ram is a huge bulky fellow who sports a strait jacket.
I have completed the game many times and have enjoyed all of my paythroughs so I cannot stress enough that this game is old but gold and I am sure it will give you hours of fun and excitement as you bash zombie skulls mercilessly. I strongly recommend you buy the game, and then you will see what I mean!
