The side-scrolling and retro action classic game Kero Blaster is now out on PlayStation 4. The simple action game’s release on PS4 marks the first time the much loved game has been released on console. Created by Japanese indie developer Daisuke Amaya of Studio Pixel, Kero Blaster features a bipedal frog whose mission is to defeat enemies and bosses as he navigates seven different stages.

Cave Story Success sets up Kero Blaster for PS4

Daisuke Amaya came to prominence thanks to the success of Cave Story, a freeware platform-adventure game released on PC in 2004. A reflection of the indie developers’ dedication is that it took Amaya eight years to create that game in his spare time. Following the success of Cave Story, the developer decided to quit his job as a printer software maker and focus on making games full time.

Kero Blaster on PS4 is therefore Amaya’s first title since choosing his passion and the games release on iOS and Windows. The game is a  linear side-scrolling action platformer that has now been ported to PS4 and features simple but challenging gameplay mechanics.

In addition to the familiar play made popular on mobile devices, in the PS4 edition of the game players simply move right to encounter and try to defeat bosses. These bosses and other strong enemies are what stand in the way of your completing seven varied stages.

The boss battles in Kero Blaster are quite tough but your character is able to power themselves up with stores that can be found during stages. For action platformer veterans who could be left wanting more when they complete the game, more is in store. The PS4 version of Kero Blaster will also come with a new “Zangyou Mode”. The additional mode can be unlocked upon completing the game once.

As an aside, Kero Blaster looks like a great title for fans of retro themed action platformers, and its heartening to see indie developers still getting airtime on PS4.
